Forty Funniest Cricketers of All Time

Second XI

Before we get into the dozen or so remaining cricketers in my countdown of the forty funniest cricketers of all time, I thought I'd put together an XI from the 28 cricketers I've listed so far.

The goal here was to come up with a side, in batting order and including a 12th man, that could play off against the top dozen in the list (which, as the comedy cricketing fates would have it, is a damn good cricket team). I wasn't looking to pick the funniest side from those 28 players (at face value that would just be players 13 to 23, with number 24 as twelfth man). No, I'm looking to build the best team.

Here's what I've come up with.

1. Douglas Jardine (c)
2. Joe Root
3. Mike Gatting
4. Michael Clarke
5. Misbah-ul-Haq
6. Javed Miandad
7. Mark Boucher (wk)
8. Shane Warne
9. Jason Gillespie
10. Allan Donald
11. Bruce Reid

Gary Pratt (12th man)

Not bad, huh? I had to stretch for openers - exercise for readers: why are openers not funny? - but otherwise I think it's a damn strong team.

Here's the Master List of the Forty Funniest Cricketers of All Time.
