Pakistan v Everybody Else

Here’s how virtually every other team in world cricket would approach ensuring a Test match win when bowling first:

Here’s how Pakistan does it:

And that’s why Pakistan is the best team in world cricket.

Of course, what all this talk about flowcharts and diagrams reminds me of is Averages, Geometry and Combinatorics – The Quiz, an excerpt from my book, The Instant Cricket Library (and simultaneously an excerpt from Mathematics for Under-14 Cricketers. Don’t think about it too much, it’s just how the book works).

Here’s an excerpt from that excerpt:

Question 4

Pat Cummins is attempting to york Kane Williamson. Assume that Cummins releases the ball from 2.5m above the ground towards the feet of Kane Williamson, 20m away.

a) Construct a right-angled triangle with Cummins and his outstretched arm as one side and the length of the pitch another side. Use the Pythagoras Rule to calculate the length of the hypotenuse and, hence, how far the ball must travel.

b) Assume Cummins is bowling at 150km/h. Determine how long it will take for the yorker to reach Williamson’s feet.

c) If Kane Williamson is 1.73m tall, determine how long it would take for the ball to instead reach Williamson’s head.

d) Derive a beamer function that shows how tempting that reduction in reaction time would be to Cummins if Williamson had somehow brilliantly got underneath the previous attempted yorker and swatted the ball over the cover boundary for six.

You can read the rest (and dozens more) in my book, The Instant Cricket Library.
